Light Project
PROJECT 3: LIGHT
For this project we designed a chapel at Farmingdale State college. The college requested to design a building that would serve as a peaceful and spiritual place for students to attend regardless of their religion. we designed this building using components that would bring natural light into the building giving it a sacred feeling.
RESEARCH

The Kimbell Art Museum.
Designed by Louis Khan. The architect used concrete vaults that have skylight along the top of the vault going from end to end.

The use of vaults was intentionally planned to follow the sun path so that the light enters the building through the entire day. Plexiglass sky lights allow the light to enter directly but it gets reflected back to the ceiling of the building to create illumination. They used aluminum reflectors and mesh panels to make this possible.

Another technique used is the separation between the roof and the walls to allow more light to enter through the spaces between those elements. This makes the illumination to be very discrete and not direct.
SITE SELECTED

I chose this site for the easy access to it from the main street on that side of campus. Also because it has enough surrounding space so it can catch a lot of sun light without other buildings blocking it.
